“Bold, provocative…illuminates why we’re having fewer babies, the middle class is stagnating, unemployment is shifting, and new powers are rising.” (Adam Grant)
The world is changing drastically before our eyes - will you be prepared for what comes next? A groundbreaking analysis from one of the world’s foremost experts on global trends, including analysis on how COVID-19 will amplify and accelerate each of these changes.
Once upon a time, the world was neatly divided into prosperous and backward economies. Babies were plentiful, workers outnumbered retirees, and people aspiring towards the middle class yearned to own homes and cars. Companies didn’t need to see any further than Europe and the United States to do well. Printed money was legal tender for all debts, public and private. We grew up learning how to “play the game”, and we expected the rules to remain the same as we took our first job, started a family, saw our children grow up, and went into retirement with our finances secure.
That world - and those rules - are over.
By 2030, a new reality will take hold, and before you know it:
There will be more grandparents than grandchildren
The middle class in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa will outnumber the US and Europe combined
The global economy will be driven by the non-Western consumer for the first time in modern history
There will be more global wealth owned by women than men
There will be more robots than workers
There will be more computers than human brains
There will be more currencies than countries
All these trends, currently underway, will converge in the year 2030 and change everything you know about culture, the economy, and the world.
According to Mauro F. Guillen, the only way to truly understand the global transformations underway - and their impacts - is to think laterally. That is, using “peripheral vision”, or approaching problems creatively and from unorthodox points of view. Rather than focusing on a single trend - climate change or the rise of illiberal regimes, for example - Guillen encourages us to consider the dynamic inter-play between a range of forces that will converge on a single tipping point - 2030 - that will be, for better or worse, the point of no return.
2030 is both a remarkable guide to the coming changes and an exercise in the power of “lateral thinking”, thereby revolutionizing the way you think about cataclysmic change and its consequences.

The us superpower days are over that’s for sure. Drumpf made the us the laughing Stock of the world. He drove the final nails in the coffin. There will never be another middle class or an american dream again. Only super rich and super poor this will be the downfall driving the us into 3rd world status by 2040,

I think you are underestimating the scope of the problem, as the American empire declines like all empires are what to do, so will the fabric of the current world. Far from being a utopia, history has shown time and time again that those that have to live throw great upheavals never fare well.

People have been predicting the decline of the United States since the 50s. Around every ten years, the bandwagon gains steam again, and Chicken Little screams his head off yet another time. The boy who called wolf about American declinism is never correct, however. The US has the largest navigable river system in the world that connects the best farmland in the world. The placement between two oceans serves to promote investment because a land invasion is impossible. The US is home to the best universities and the best tech companies. The US is the wealthiest nation in the world, by far. Others may approach our GDP, but they spend a huge portion of that GDP on food, supplies, policing, pensions, etc. for their massive populations. The US has the most powerful military by far, the only blue water navy worthy of a mention, the most foreign bases, and the best system of alliances. Give Unrivaled by Dr. Michael Beckley a read instead of calling wolf yet again…

Also, please don’t let me stop you from criticizing Trump lol. The mistaken warnings of America’s decline do serve a useful function. One of the greatest strengths of the US is the ability to create a more and more perfect union as time goes on. Although we will never be perfect, an endless focus on identifying and solving important problems is one of the key factors that prevents our decline. If leaders like Trump lead us astray, we can use the power of the vote to replace them. Authoritarian countries do not enjoy such a powerful mechanism to reverse many types of decline. They often become stuck with disastrous policies, as anyone paying attention can clearly observe in the world today.

One more thing: The US Empire enjoys a situation that is extremely unlike any other empire in history, and it is quite impossible to overstate that fact!
The empires of the past were in Eurasia, where they were surrounded by potential adversaries. Because of the massive protection provided by two vast oceans and the weak geographical positions of Canada and Mexico, the US will never decline because of foreign invasion.
Before vaccines, pandemics posed a far greater threat to the stability of empires such as the Roman Empire. Modern medicine is a game changer for a dominant empire.
Another factor to consider is that many empires relied on a money system based on precious metals. If they ran out of a metal such as silver for coins, they would need to spend enormous resources on conquering other regions in order to gain more silver. The US has no such concern.
Most people in the US share a strong common identify. Previous empires did not have Hollywood, television, the Internet, international sporting events, and popular culture to bind far flung parts of the empire together as a cohesive whole. Anyone who thinks that today’s world is comparable to the world of previous empires hasn’t thought things through.
Do not make the mistake of predicting future American politics based on the present situation!!! Although political problems can temporarily disrupt the United States, they have always been resolved over time. The American Civil War showed that any attempts by states to break away from the Union will be met with extremely strong resistance.
The growing number of minorities will greatly reduce today’s partisan politics. White Christians see their numbers reducing ever more quickly, so they are doing everything they can to preserve their power for as long as possible. Increasing numbers of Hispanics in a state like Texas will shift it to a reliably blue state (just like California), and many Republicans will move toward the middle as a means to maintain power in the federal government.
