Chang, the author of the international bestseller Bad Samaritans, is one of the world’s most respected economists, a voice of sanity-and wit-in the tradition of John Kenneth Galbraith and Joseph Stiglitz. 23 Things They Don’t Tell You About Capitalism equips readers with an understanding of how global capitalism works-and doesn’t. In his final chapter, “How to Rebuild the World,” Chang offers a vision of how we can shape capitalism to humane ends, instead of becoming slaves of the market.
Ha-Joon Chang teaches in the Faculty of Economics at the University of Cambridge. His books include the bestselling Bad Samaritans: The Myth of Free Trade and the Secret History of Capitalism. His Kicking Away the Ladder received the 2003 Myrdal Prize, and, in 2005, Chang was awarded the Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought.

Thanks Riptide, I have always hated the idea of Capitalism, but I hate the idea of Socialism more. I have always believed that capitalism could work so much better for all, but never had an answer as how to achieve that. Capitalism allowed this country to grow great, by rewarding people for their amazing achievements, but fails as it widens the gap between rich and poor, more so today then ever. Thank you for sharing.

And Hogweed above nails it perfectly.

Hogweed above nails it well.

If you are American and “hate the idea of socialism”, it is because the USA has lied to the people about socialism for it’s entire existence.
Socialism is NOT communism, and communism has never been satisfactorily applied due to its corruption under Lenin, Stalin, Mao etc.
Socialism, as applied to Social Democracy, means you have a share in what is around you. You pay in, you see results. You’re against paying taxes? Well so am I, because our taxes go into militarising police forces and funding the arms industry. I’d rather my taxes were spent on healthcare, education, culture, housing etc and I’d rather my taxes joined the taxes of billionaires and corporations who avoid it under the current systems.
No system is perfect, but the USA has been lied to so comprehensively for so long that it no longer has any interest in fairness.

I wonder what is the impediment to marrying Capitalism and Socialism together in way to get the best of both worlds.
Use capitalism to create wealth and then use socialism to distribute it. It is not as if both systems are sent by a divine command that people, even the secular ones, cannot change or amend.
In recent era, social-democrats, most welfare societies and welfare-liberalism are doing exactly that.
I think the ideological divide is religiously maintained by the big business who, ironically, sustain their pro-capitalism propaganda through the very people they are exploiting.

“Socialism is NOT communism, and communism has never been satisfactorily applied due to its corruption.”
As per Marxism you can’t just jump into communism anyway, ‘cept perhaps with a bloody revolution but the reason all those ideas have been tried countless times in countless contexts and failed miserably every single time isn’t that it hasn’t been “applied satisfactorily” but that it’s a flawed concept, a hopelessly ineffective, bureaucratic and tyrannical system of central planning. Worse still, you end up with an oligarchy just like in any other system but the oligarchy is even less meritocratic and there’s no social mobility for anyone else. Socialism or communism is the last thing you want if you value liberty and prosperity, it may sound good on paper to ignorant people but like with all leftist policies real world implementations of their ideology always end achieving the exact opposite of desired objectives .

No, I’d argue that its failures every time have been down to people being greedy and power hungry. The system doesn’t work because it requires those in charge to work for the community, rather than just for themselves. Someone is always going to come in and ruin things for everybody else.
But like someone else mentioned, it doesn’t have to be either/or. Socialist principles have worked and do work in mixed economies all over the world. Not in the ultra-capitalist hellhole of the USA though.
If I was feeling uncharitable, I’d say the US has a horror for social policies because they’re a bunch of greedy ba$tards who never learned to share. But the kinder way is to go back to my original point - people in the US fundamentally misunderstand socialism because politicians have flat-out lied about it for the own ends for decades.

Just to clear something up for all you knuckleheads: America has been a definitive plutocracy ever since JFK was elected. Also began its trajectory toward a plutocracy 25 years before that.
So for y’all to incessantly reference America as a scapegoat of “CAPITALISM: BAD” is both inadequate and shameful.
to criticize capitalism through the lens of America simply exhibits their critical lack of knowledge. Or most likely: their total disregard to read up on the subject.

When FDR divorced the USD from the Gold Standard during the Great Depression, he set in motion the means for the Federal Reserve (& the BIS, the IMF, the world bank, etc) to slowly capture all aspects of commerce & finance, inevitably mutating America’s economy & society into a sort of crony capitalist/plutocratic zombie out of the dead carcass of “true capitalism**”
(**the economic system present during America’s declaration of independence; late-18th century)
