If you wanted to build a machine that would distribute propaganda to millions of people, distract them from important issues, energize hatred and bigotry, erode social trust, undermine respectable journalism, foster doubts about science, and engage in massive surveillance all at once, you would make something a lot like Facebook. Of course, none of that was part of the plan. In this fully updated paperback edition of Antisocial Media, Siva Vaidhyanathan explains how Facebook devolved from an innocent social site hacked together by Harvard students into a force that, while it may make personal life just a little more pleasurable, makes democracy a lot more challenging. It’s an account of the hubris of good intentions, a missionary spirit, and an ideology that sees computer code as the universal solvent for all human problems. And it’s an indictment of how “social media” has fostered the deterioration of democratic culture around the world, from facilitating Russian meddling in support of Trump’s election to the exploitation of the platform by murderous authoritarians in Burma and the Philippines. Both authoritative and trenchant, Antisocial Media shows how Facebook’s mission went so wrong.

There is so much truth to this book.. We should be able to agree to disagree without harmful words or actions. but the media and social media push it full force.. Shame on them.

I get how there’s a need to establish cultural relevance in a book such as this, but the statement “facilitating Russian meddling in support of Trump’s election” irks me.
Yes, Russian trolls used Facebook, in support of Trump. But no one ever mentions the paid army of trolls Hillary had out there too also freely making use of Facebook.
Prior to the 2016 elections, MSN still allowed user comments on their articles, and it was easy to trace back the user names to their Facebook pages. And there were always a lot more Clinton fanatics than Trump fanatics out there.

The thesis here is that Facebook isn’t left wing enough, which is inherently absurd. Anyone discussing politics on the Right on Facebook is at constant risk of getting banned, while Leftists can say almost anything they want. Facebook has extensive exclusively left wing partisan political censorship already and this author is mad that they just aren’t censoring enough? Cry me a river while I play you a sad, sad song on the world’s smallest violin.

Facebook is progressive propaganda machine. Now you want agree to disagree? How about 2016, fake Russia gate, partisan impeachment!
Go and enjoy TRUMP 2020!

Logged off of FB a few years ago. Haven’t looked back.
I had spotted myself “curating” a view of my life, which photos, how I wrote about them. That was when I knew I had to cut from FB entirely.

Technocracy, it’s the way forward.
Facebook is destroying our democracies, just in almost the opposite way the lunatic who wrote this book thinks it is.

Yeah, ssafe, but you’re just unusually shallow ‘n superficial - entirely unrepresentative of the typical FB denizen.

As a progressive liberal in the 60’s I fought and marched and spoke out for MORE free speech and now my fellow liberals sit back and laugh as conservatives lose their free speech.
Free speech is only for progressives? :)
FREE THE SLAVES used to be hate speech at one time.

What about the media at large? Neil Postman has been writing about this for years. CNN, NBC and the rest of the alphabet soup news media has not only become unreliable, making the news up half the time, but they’ve also been slanting the news through visuals for decades. Of course that still hasn’t stopped the New York Times from continuing to print toilet paper for the masses during the pandemic. The idea of the get-out the vote, in an age when young adults cast their vote on who looks sexy or has a smooth voice should scare the living daylights out of the entire world. Thankfully, our good (sarcasm) Sen. Elizabeth Warren hasn’t abolished the electoral college yet, or we would be in a virtual free-fall democracy.
