An unsparing, incisive, yet ultimately hopeful look at how we can shed the American obsession with self-reliance that has made us less healthy, less secure, and less fulfilled
The promise that you can “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” is central to the story of the American Dream. It’s the belief that if you work hard and rely on your own resources, you will eventually succeed. However, time and again we have seen how this foundational myth, with its emphasis on individual determination, brittle self-sufficiency, and personal accomplishment, does not help us. Instead, as income inequality rises around us, we are left with shame and self-blame for our condition.
Acclaimed journalist Alissa Quart argues that at the heart of our suffering is a do-it-yourself ethos, the misplaced belief in our own independence and the conviction that we must rely on ourselves alone. Looking at a range of delusions and half solutions—from “grit” to the false Horatio Alger story to the rise of GoFundMe—Quart reveals how we have been steered away from robust social programs that would address the root causes of our problems. Meanwhile, the responsibility for survival has been shifted onto the backs of ordinary people, burdening generations with debt instead of providing the social safety net we so desperately need.
Insightful, sharply argued, and characterized by Quart’s lively writing and deep reporting, and for fans of Evicted and Nickel and Dimed, Bootstrapped is a powerful examination of what ails us at a societal level and a plan for how we can free ourselves from these self-defeating narratives.

Why the repost? Suggestion: commenters should save their comments locally and reupload them when this happens (which seems to be more frequent than not).

No doubt written by some woke wimmin who is incapable of surviving without the “American dream” there to support her

I am beginning to think that D here has some power over moderation. It is amazing how your posts seem to disappear and reappear at will.
Why do you even bother to upload this stuff over and over again when the comments get to hurtful for you
when it is clear the vast majority of users are completely uninterested if not openly hostile to your contributions.
is this a sickness or malevolence?

Thank you! This sounds interesting. Is there a type-o in the author name? I think the author should be Alissa Quart, no?

The US has more black millionaires than the rest of the world combined. Time to write a book to “fix” that.

Thanks for the upload! Cheers

@Columbia21 If this is not the sort of book you are into, why even bother posting a comment. This is a site for audiobooks, all audiobooks, there are plenty of audiobooks here I think are stupid, so I just continue looking for the books I would like to listen to, not commenting on what I don’t like. Why waste your time harassing people because they have different views to you. Every uploader is doing a service by uploading, even if it not something you are into

DaPhreak you are spot on.
People who are ‘anti woke’ I simply view as ‘fast asleep’ and ignorant of the world around them.

@Columbia21 “it is clear the vast majority of users are completely uninterested if not openly hostile”
There are tens of thousand of users, probably several hundred who download any given book, and a dozen bigoted trolls who attack uploads where the title or subject, or the ethnicity of the author triggers them, without ever reading any of the books they praise or damn. The same ones will whine endlessly about being cancelled then try to cancel books that offend their sensibilities.
And if you had ever shared a book yourself, you’d know that uploaders can delete their own torrents, to fix mistakes normally. I’d prefer they did not do so just to purge hateful comments, and instead report the comments so we can erase them, but I can understand the motivation.

@Gweilo “The same ones will whine endlessly about being cancelled then try to cancel books that offend their sensibilities.” Seen you doing that many times here, threatening them you are taking the book down many times. So like most far lefties, its only when you are offended that the book needs to be banned.

Thanks for sharing! Hard to understand why something so uncontroversial (e.g., ubiquity of crowdfunding for medical expenses = bad, can’t we all agree?) would generate such venom and hysteria, but it does give a sense of the Trump-era direction of discourse among certain quarters
