Published since September 1843 to take part in “a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress.”
The Economist is a global weekly magazine written for those who share an uncommon interest in being well and broadly informed. Each issue explores the close links between domestic and international issues, business, politics, finance, current affairs, science, technology and the arts.
“It is not only The Economist’s name that people find baffling. Here are some other common questions.
First, why does it call itself a newspaper? Even when The Economist incorporated the Bankers’ Gazette and Railway Monitor from 1845 to 1932, it also described itself as “a political, literary and general newspaper”.
It still does so because, in addition to offering analysis and opinion, it tries in each issue to cover the main events—business and political—of the week. It goes to press on Thursdays and, printed simultaneously in six countries, is available in most of the world’s main cities the following day or soon after. Readers everywhere get the same editorial matter. The advertisements differ. The running order of the sections, and sometimes the cover, also differ. But the words are the same, except that each week readers in Britain get a few extra pages devoted to British news.
Why is it anonymous? Many hands write The Economist, but it speaks with a collective voice. Leaders are discussed, often disputed, each week in meetings that are open to all members of the editorial staff. Journalists often co-operate on articles. And some articles are heavily edited. The main reason for anonymity, however, is a belief that what is written is more important than who writes it. As Geoffrey Crowther, editor from 1938 to 1956, put it, anonymity keeps the editor “not the master but the servant of something far greater than himself. You can call that ancestor-worship if you wish, but it gives to the paper an astonishing momentum of thought and principle.”

So what exactly is happening with the US economy:
What is happening it the government is borrowing and creating massive amounts of money to infuse into the economy to juice the numbers.
None of this spending is the result of real economic growth.
Not only that, this stimulus is crowding out capital from the private sector. In order to create the money to spend, inflationary pressure means consumers can’t afford to spend as much money and businesses are seeing shrinking revenue and high interest rates make borrowing capital an increasingly unattractive option. So, the more government has to spend to juice the numbers, the more likely it will have to continue to spend in the future.
Whatever quantitative tightening the FED has been engaged in by selling off securities to shrink the money supply, is having no effect as Reverse Repurchasing Agreements are putting more money back into the banking system and back into the economy. So, whatever actions being done in one direction are being undone by actions made in the other.
The government, is now adding a trillion dollars to the deficit every 100 days. And this While the deficit is needing to be refinanced at these higher interest rates, Making just the payments on the interest alone, a bigger and bigger percentage of the necessary spending.
It is becoming a monthly ordeal at this point, where the CPI comes out with its numbers only to come back later to make the adjustments that refute the initial claims of economic improvement. The Biden administration appears to be more interested in projecting economic realities than actually doing the work to create them. Between that and congress’s refusal to cut spending, our government continues to push the can down the road as our economic situation grows increasingly dire and difficult to correct.
The other factor the government uses to justify its claims of a “Strong Economy” is the Stockmarket. I wish I knew how to explain how the market is able to stay so strong, when the real economy is so bad, but this is less important when you consider that most Americans are not able to enjoy this benefit in the first place. It is becoming more and more apparent that the only ones enjoying the few economic incentives that exist these days are the wealthy. And my fear is for the majority of Americans and the ones who need economic relieve the most, none of this government spending and borrowing has done anything but crush them further under heel.
I am not particularly a fan of the city of London’s international publication, but I really hope this is what the Economist goes on to explain when it talks about the “pumped-up economy”.

Colorado41, an economist you are not…..just think for a second, if the business economy was doing so poorly as you suggest, why are the top 500 industrials all making money and all three markets are at record highs. Go back to school mate! PS: I know of no one who wants a job that is not working…and if you do, then I suggest that individual look in the mirror. I get the feeling you live in a backwoods, Red State, of the Religious Right who love to tell others what to do and how they should live. PSS: it was announced yesterday, that the US now produces more oil than any other country. PSSS: Did you see the list of latest largest Corporations, Tesla…Trump…that have not paid ANY Income Taxes for years? Hard for the gov to pay it’s bills that way. And lets not forget, Trumps Tax cuts of 4 years ago went away in 2024 for the working stiff, but Corporates remain cut. Ok, off the soap box, you just struck a nerve mate!

@Colorado: you write an essay in response to the headline of an article you haven’t read.
You could go to Reddit or Substack some other site where you can expound your economic philosophy. Here, is for comments on the torrents. Preferably after reading them.
